Bat Survey to Control Massive Loss of Bat Population

In one of the recent article of wall street journal released on April-2011, the issue of massive loss in bat population was discussed and explained why bat survey in UK is required. Ecology consultants have warned to the environmental department UK as more than 70% decrease is found in bat population of Britain. This declining graph has started after the year 1950. The ecology scientists are considering the loss of bat population as the loss of nature in Britain. There are various reasons for this sudden decline of bat population like loss of habitat, loss of food, loss of roosting sites and light pollution. In London, there are some places where it seems like daylight for the whole night; it's like the city is bathing with light at night.

All these human interventions, irrespective of the fact done intentionally or unintentionally, have cause rapid decline in the bat population of Britain. Thus, the Britain government has ruled an act to protect this most endangered species. In UK, it is a crime to:
  • Kill or injure bat
  • Create disturbance near bat roosts or habitats
  • destroy bat roosts
  • Selling bat or any organ of bat
  • Obstruct access to a bat roost
To protect bat population, Bat conservation trust has been established in 1990. This trust monitor the bat population by conducting regular bat surveys. The results of bat surveys are used as an indicator of biodiversity by the DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Affairs). As per the law in UK, if you are developing property or buying a land then you must contact the ecology consultants and submit the survey report of bat population. Not abiding these laws may put you in jail or charge you big amount. The government has also right to halt your development work. Thus, it is advisable to contact the professional ecological consultancy firm to get resolution in a way that your development process doesn't stop and even bats do not get harmed.

Newt Fencing - Protects you from the Uninvited Entry of Wildlife

Do you have your farm house? If yes, then you may have seen that normally all farm houses are having strong wall and current wires around to protect you from the poisonous or non-poisonous reptiles. Properties near the water area, forest, barren land and farms can create a threat for you thus you need to create a proper fencing. Newt fencing the most suitable for prohibiting reptiles and snakes into your residential area that's the reason it is also known as snake or reptile fencing.

There are other types of fencing available in the market but newt fencing for the great crested newt is the most effective one. There are many ecology consultants in UK to help you in creating newt fencing in affordable cost. It is a fact that every creature has its own choice of living atmosphere thus you should study your surroundings before you choose the fencing type. In this case, ecological consultants of reputed consultancy firm can help you choose the appropriate fencing type.

Another aspect of newt fencing for great crested newt is the protection laws ruled by UK government. UK government has ruled special mitigation schemes to save these species from being lost on this planet. Government take legal action or charge a big penalty amount if you have built any infrastructure without approving permission from the environmental authority. A licensed ecology consulting firm has authority to review your vicinity and make a report. If existence of reptiles, snakes or any such species is found then you can consult the ecological scientist to apply mitigation schemes.

Need for Birds Survey Varies According to the Site and Development Work

In United Kingdom, there is almost no place where birds will not be found, and therefore, at some point or the other it is necessary to conduct birds survey under the guidance of expert ecology consultants. These consultants are usually efficient in conducting surveys such as nesting bird, breeding bird and wintering bird surveys using a number of techniques. As there are many techniques as well as many types of birds survey, there are equally many rationales and reasons to conduct the same. For example, the reason for conducting birds survey in the inner city will be different than that of near SPA. In United Kingdom, all wild birds are protected from killing, injury and possessing under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 as amended. Under this law, it is an offense to take, damage or destroy a nest while in use or being built, and to take or destroy the eggs of any nesting bird.

Also, species such as kingfisher, red kite and green shank are listed on Schedule 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 as amended. According to this law, it is an offense to harass intentionally or unintentionally these species or their young. Such species included in Schedule 1 are given higher priority in terms of legal protection or nature conservation. Among the most popular of the methods for birds survey are Common Bird Census (CBC) and Breeding Bird Survey (BBS). Professional ecology consultants know exactly how to use these techniques and others such as Wetland Bird Survey and British Bird Mitigation. These methodologies are generally used for wintering and non-breeding species. There are some professional ecology agencies which have contributed a great deal as far as preservation of the natural resources specially the birds are concerned. They have done it through carrying out birds survey with utmost sincerity and professionalism.

Ecology Consultants Contribute Immensely to Environment

Environmental consultancies hire ecology consultants and environmental engineers. The major task of environmental consultant is to work on commercial contracts and to address a variety of environmental issues for their clients. Such consultants are also all members of The Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (IEEM) or have equivalent qualifications. The area of study for ecology consultants involve disciplines such as assessment of air, land and water contamination, environmental impact assessment, environmental audit, waste management, development of environmental policy and development of environmental management systems. The sector continues to expand in response to a mix of regulation, corporate risk and reputation management.

On the other hand, Environmental engineers handle the areas such as waste management studies to evaluate the significance of such hazards, advise the resolution or treatment. They are also into framing regulations to avoid the mishap. Engineers take troubles to chart out how to manage municipal water supply and industrial wastewater treatment. They also strive to address global environmental issues such as acid rain, global warming, ozone depletion, water pollution and air pollution from automobile exhausts and industrial sources. Environmental engineers are also experts in providing ecological fencing solutions including reptile, amphibian and water vole exclusion fencing systems. These fencing systems can be customized to cater to the environmental conditions and client needs. Many of such customized exclusion fencing systems have been used in protected species projects and hence have been approved of by Natural England and the Environment Agency. Ecology consultants should be well-versed with the following subjects or education:
  • Biological sciences, environmental and earth sciences
  • Chemical and physical sciences
  • Urban and land studies
  • Engineering, agricultural and horticultural sciences
  • Social/economic/business

Following are subjects being in know of which can increase the chances of employment:
  • Geology
  • Engineering geology
  • Geography
  • Chemistry
  • Hydrogeology
  • Ecology/wildlife management
  • Environmental management
  • Environmental engineering
  • Geophysics

Woodland Management Plans Are Mostly Driven By Economic Purposes

Before exploring what are woodland management plans, it would be interesting to know what does it mean by woodland. Woodland in United Kingdom means forests comprised of native Oak and Ash woodlands to coniferous forests planted for timber production. Woodland management plans are basically plans that promote commercial timber production, game, conservation and recreation, or any combination of these. Woodlands can be of many types, structure, age and biodiversity.

Depending upon the needs of managers, ecology consultants give proper advice in this area. Since, driven by its nature of expanding relentlessly, the priorities of the manager change. At a place where there are many woodlands, woodland managment plans may be in conflict as they can be having multipurposes to get managed.

Traditional native woodland managment plans were able to create continuous source of wood for firewood and structural materials. Those plans were mainly involve coppicing trees within a woodland in rotation. These trees basically exploit their self-regenerating power as the tree is planted to ground level for its timber, with the remaining base left to regenerate naturally. Regeneration takes the form of multiple shoots, so that coppiced trees have a distinct growth form with several similar sized trunks.

Another dimension of conservation of biodiversity is animal diversity as they are controlled by plant diversity. This is obvious as plants are the providers of the architecture and structure of a habitat, as well as being the basis of food chains. Ecology consultants can play a great role as far as conservation of animal diversity is concerned. Also, woodland management plans can completely focus on encouraging plant diversity by ensuring that there are a variety of light levels within a woodland from deep shade to open glades. The ecology consultants also advise to plant a variety of native trees to enhance and nurture animal diversity as native trees are likel to support many more invertebrate species.
